Acting Techniques

Acting Techniques

My approach combines the ideas of Stanislavsky, Michael Chekhov and various body work practices such as Qigong and Energy techniques. I place the body at the heart of the training, seeking to encourage greater awareness, enriched receptivity, and a feeling of connection to the self, others and their environment.

In sessions we work with:

•   Core physical principles of centre, ground, balance, connection.

•   Use the breath as a means of finding physical ease, emotional balance and accessibility.

•   Interrogate text and establish a clear process of preparation.

•   Explore ideas and ways to retain creativity.

•   Tune the body to encourage adaptability, sensory awareness, fluidity of movement.

•   Vocal expression, articulation and the immersion of vocal rhythm into the body.

•   Concepts of energy, physiological change and the transformation performer.

•   Ways to deepen and enrich the inner life.

•   Presence and charisma.

Acting Classes

We work on different scripts each week from film or television. The session begins with some physical work followed by exercises which are related to the text. Pairs show their work and receive feedback.

The aim of the session is to provide the opportunity to hone your craft, explore approaches to performance through various exercises and show work to the class.

Qigong classes for actors

Qigong is an ancient body work practice from China. It involves moving and static postures which work with the energetic systems of the body, notably the meridian channels.  Originally developed for health and well being the practice is excellent for actors as it fine tunes and enlivens the body, increases sensitivity to inner impulses, reduces tension, brings balance and ease.

I have adapted many of the exercises specifically for actors. The concepts of centre, being present, alignment, finding a deeper connection to breath is found in this work.

The session is an opportunity to listen to your body, acknowledge and notice any blockages to expressive freedom, ground and seek a balanced state from which to work.
